We are delighted that the prestigious International Alliance Meeting and Symposium is being hosted by the IMNDA in the Convention Centre in Dublin this year! One of the main events is the open Ask The Experts meeting, which allows people living with ALS/MND and their carers attend an afternoon of presentations by ALS/MND experts and then participate in a question and answer session. This eagerly awaited event takes place on the 5th of December between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. This is a free session for everyone to attend. We are thrilled to announce our experts have been confirmed and are as follows:
Dr. Jeremy Shefner is chair of the Department of Neurology, professor of neurology, and senior vice president of Barrow Neurological Institute. Dr. Shefner’s research focuses on biomarker development and the clinical therapeutics of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and spinal muscular atrophy. He co-founded the Northeast ALS Clinical Trials Consortium (NEALS), the largest and most active consortium in the world dedicated to ALS. Dr. Shefner will be presenting and updating us on his work around Clinical Trials.
Our second expert is Dr. Jonathan Glass and he will be talking about the hope and the hype surrounding stem cells. Dr. Jonathan Glass, MD is the Professor of Neurology and Pathology at Emory University School of Medicine. He is also the Director of the Emory ALS Clinic. He is widely known for his research on the pathogenesis and prevention of nerve degeneration in neurological diseases, and for his work in human and experimental neuropathology. His laboratory focuses on the study of ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases using animal models, cell cultures, and human tissues to investigate the causes and potential cures for ALS.
Our final speaker is Prof. Jan Veldink and he will be presenting on Project Mine. Jan Veldink obtained his PhD in 2004 on environmental and genetic risk factors of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS.) Since 2008 he has a fixed position as a clinical neurologist in the UMC Utrecht. He was appointed associate professor in 2011 in neurogenetics and professor of neurology and neurogenetics.
