"On the 19/06/2024 our dad James (SHAY) Gilmartin passed away from advanced motor neurone disease.
During a conversation we had before he passed, he asked me was I going to get back running. In his final days I made him a promise I would and that I would try raise funds for IMNDA.
Throughout his illness the IMNDA attended to his needs and comforts giving him the dignity he deserved.
So, with that in mind when my dad passed away, I set myself a challenge of running 120km in July in his honour and to raise vital funds for IMNDA. Little did I know I wouldn't be alone doing this challenge; my brother-in-law Stephen Conroy and two very good friends Sarah Kinsella and Shay Powell also took it on.
The challenge quickly took on the hashtag #RUN120FORSHAY. While it was tough at times, we all got through it surpassing over 500km combined for the month. When I started this, I had hoped to raise at least €500 but between us we raised €3,000 which is literally beyond my wildest dreams.
I am beyond proud to be able to give to IMNDA these donations knowing it is done in my dad’s name. The goal now is to keep going and we will go again in January for #RUN120FORSHAY. Thank you to everyone for all the support we are forever grateful," says Chris.
What can we say here at the IMNDA - only a huge thanks to Chris, Stephen, Sarah and Shay for taking on this amazing challenge and raising the fantastic sum of €3K to remember Chris & Georgie's dad Shay.
